International engineering consultancy Cundall became the world’s first One Planet consultancy in 2012. It is using the One Planet Living Framework to bring sustainability to its own operations and the major building projects it works on around the world.
Building in a One Planet way
Founded almost 40 years ago in Newcastle and Edinburgh, this multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy now has 20 offices in 11 countries.
The Cundall partnership has a reputation as a global leader in sustainable design, winning several awards for their projects and their business. With input from Bioregional they have drawn a 12 page Sustainability Roadmap which we have endorsed, setting the firm on a journey to sustainability. The accompanying Sustainability Policy has been signed by all 36 partners
This roadmap uses the ten One Planet Living principles with targets for 2015 and 2025. To date the firm has:
- Developed and implemented a Low Energy Action Plan for each of its buildings
- Displayed monthly energy consumption charts in all offices.
- Developed a sustainable purchasing policy for office consumables
- Has begun to undertake annual office waste and water audits
- Is undertaking community projects each year
New green teams have been established in regional offices, developing bespoke plans for achieving Cundall’s One Planet living targets. This includes establishing a new Green Team at the London office in 2013, with 17 members. So far they have introduced a bee hive and wormery to their city centre location.
