One Planet Communities

Bioregional works to create attractive, inspiring places which help people to live better, happier and healthier lives, within a fair share of our one planet’s resources. We draw on the lessons learned in planning, building and operating the pioneering BedZED eco-village in London, which is our international headquarters.

From these beginnings we have grown a network of One Planet Communities with One Planet Living Action Plans that include stretching but achievable goals. We help prepare these plans, endorse them – thereby conferring One Planet Community status – and then work in partnership with the communities to measure performance against these plans and update them for a changing world. There are now more than ten One Planet Communities located globally across the UK, Europe, North America, Africa and Australia.

We also engage in projects to improve the sustainability of major development projects, and look for opportunities to create new One Planet Communities.

The 10 Principles

Rooted in the science and metrics of ecological and carbon footprinting, 10 One Planet principles are used to structure thinking and inform holistic action. These principles stemmed from Bioregional’s experience of working on BedZED, a pioneering eco-village in South London, UK. Together, the principles provide a holistic framework to help organisations and project teams examine the sustainability challenges faced, develop appropriate solutions and communicate the actions being taken to key stakeholders such as colleagues, the supply chain, clients, customers and local and national government.

One Planet Living Endorsed Partnership

Action plans

Every project or organization in the One Planet Living initiative – One Planet Program - develops a ‘One Planet Action Plan’ based on the 10 principles. The Action Plan outlines the strategies, actions and targets to achieve One Planet Living.  This provides a pathway for implementation that can be monitored and adapted over time. The Action Plan is made public so everyone can see the commitments being made. As well as an Action Plan, every project or organisation reports annually on progress and publishes the results.
